You need to look at what you can afford, but... If you're buying something new, look above 1GHz, eg. Athlon 2000+ or so would be nice. RAM is dirst cheap, get half a Gig at least. Big payoffs here. Audio: if you will at all consider a laptop in the future, go for the RME Hammerfall whatsit - check the website, but you get up to 24 digital channels (or 8 I/O analog, depending on box) and effectively a PCI or cardbus firewire card (custom RME though) - so you can easily use the gear on PC or laptop. If you can afford it, perhaps just go straight for a DELL or IBM laptop. Or if you want something really sexy, the Apple Titanium - lower resolution but wide screen and really, the sexiest laptop on the planet - although just check for Linux drivers for RME card on Apple - I can't answer that one. If you get digital outs, you need external stuff that can use it - for the money, the Yamaha 01V mixing desk is excellent - small enough to take for live performances if you have a band, and with the expansion card, you get 8 full-digital I/Os to your RME. Of course, you can just keep going up from there. Others can recommend HDDs, etc. cheers zen On Wed, 2002-09-04 at 11:35, Dan Harper wrote: > > its not "linux". its "linux + kernel-config + hardware". > > there's no doubt that linux does extraordinarily badly on > > some setups, even ones where windows performs OK. > > but its equally true that it does extraordinarily well on > > some others, better than just about anything else except OS X > > (perhaps). > > Well, I must say that I'm having many problems using Ardour on my machine. > When I read the post that said "I used Ardour for 2 hours straght without a > problem" I'm wondering: "This guy must be crazy, I can't run Ardour for more > than 30 seconds without something going wrong". > > And given Paul's reponse above, it makes me nervous. > > So, I'm willing to upgrade my computer to fix these issues, and I think it > would be a good idea for everyone to list their hardware/software config and > report their successes.
