i know of no way with current kernel technology to generate MTC so
that other devices will lock to it. with 2.5/2.6, it should be
easy. i think that the problem is that ardour's MTC output is
"bursty", and other devices see this and refuse (or cannot) lock to
such a signal.

my main plan for now is to generate SMPTE directly, which is about
1000% easier.
