I haven't touched anything like that since Mandrake was installed on this 
box, more than a year ago. I do quite a bit of C++ development on this box, 
and have never had any problem with any of the usual GNU utilities not 
finding anything.

Just to be certain, I have run ldconfig again. 

ldconfig -p | grep libpanel includes in the output:
        libpanel.so.5.1 (libc6) => /lib/libpanel.so.5.1
        libpanel.so.5.0 (libc6) => /lib/libpanel.so.5.0
        libpanel.so.5 (libc6) => /usr/lib/libpanel.so.5
        libpanel.so.4.2 (libc6) => /lib/libpanel.so.4.2
        libpanel.so.4 (libc6) => /lib/libpanel.so.4
        libpanel.so.3.0 (libc6) => /lib/libpanel.so.3.0
        libpanel.so.3 (libc6) => /lib/libpanel.so.3
        libpanel.so.1.9.9e (libc6) => /lib/libpanel.so.1.9.9e
        libpanel.so.1 (libc6) => /lib/libpanel.so.1

so there should be no problem with ./configure being unable to find 
libpanel.

Yet it still insists:

checking for new_panel in -lpanel... no
configure: error: *** you don't have the panel library correctly installed
configure: error: /bin/sh './configure' failed for ksi_ardour

So I am still puzzled by this. And there is the usual thought niggling in 
my head: "if it happens to me, it's going to happen to a bunch of people 
who try to build the release version".
