I turned off all network connections and plugged out the cable...
local XFree86 with wm2...
it didn't help at all.

no, but IMHO this cannot be the problem. it crackles very very often, way more 
often than a harddisk should be accessed...
it's like an always clipping, but the peak is far below clipping... 
the louder the signal, the more crackles...


any ideas?
