    OK, the usual suspects for this problem are (described in the
    README):
    
     * make sure you have installed gettext-0.11.5 or above.
    
     * make sure you set an ACLOCAL_FLAGS properly, as discussed in
    the README.
    
    From the error messages (very well hidden in the garbage output
    :) one or both of these is the problem.
