The problem is, if i nderstand you right, to get the signal from the audio cd into ardour. There's several solutions to this: 1.] rip the cd and import the track in ardour this is straightforward. use [for example "grip" for this purpose] 2.] play the cd in xmms and somehow route the signal from the cd to the input of an ardour track. This can be a bit more complicated depending on your hw configuration. Ardour uses Jack, so you have to get jack to make the signal from the cd available for routing to jack clients. Again, there's several solutions: a.] Make xmms use the xmms-jack output plugin and connect it to the input of an ardour track I didn't get the jack plugin to work. maybe you have more luck.. b.] Make xmms use the alsa output plugin but point it to a jack-pcm device [an alsa-lib jack plugin which needs to be explicitly cvompiled and installed and is set up via .asoundrc] I couldn't get this to work either.. c.] Make xmms use the oss or alsa plugin and have it playback just regularly [i don't know if xmms just tells the drive to play the cd or if it extracts it digitally and plays it via its output driver. in the second case, the text below does not apply exactly but you should get the picture] In this case you have to make your soundcard capture the cd-signal and make it available on the audio capture device. This can usually be accomplished with alsamixer. When you open alsa-mixer you can see several channels. Most of them can be muted [press "m"], and if the hw allows it, they can also be selected as capture devices. In my case [terratec dmx xfire 1024] i have the choice of either selecting "CD" as a capture device [toggle with "space"] or i can select "Mix" which would capture all of the signals going out of the soundcards mixer. "Mix" can be problematic because you can get feedback loops if you have monitoring on or route the input signal to the output again on some other way. On my soundcard, selecting the capture device is not enough. I alsa have to set capture on the "Capture" - device [in alsamixer i have a channel that's called "Capture"].. and i have to set capture on the "ADC" [analog to digital converter].. Now, if everyhting is setup right you can just connect the ardour track's input to the pcm_capture devices and off you go.. > > Last week with beta7 I had XMMS playing a CD and activity > on the mixer lights.
