I too am interested in making convolution reverb easy for the
masses. Our target (and source of inspiration) should be AudioEase's
Altiverb. Check out their webpage, it includes good information
(PDFs) on how to record your own impulse responses to use as input
to their preprocessor. Basically, they use a swept tone, the
longer you run it, the more signal/noise ratio you'll get in the final
response. As an alternative, they also support the use of a
starter pistol as the impulse, which is preprocessed less (more
like your delta function). I too have been talking to EE friends
about it :)

It would be great if we could make a tool to capture and process
new responses for use in another new tool: an easy to use reverb
frontend with brutefir 'round the back. This is on my evergrowing
list of TODO projects, but I'd be happy if someone cranked it out before
I can get to it.
