It decides whether the effect of the plugin happens before or after
the fader.

The signal flow goes somthing like this:

  Input 
    |          
    |
   Pre
 Inserts,
Sends and
 Plugins
    |
    |
  Fader
    |
    |
   Post
 Inserts,
Sends and
 Plugins
    |
    |
  Output 

Note, that As I understand it, if you add more than one send/insert/plugin
then they are processed in order...So...

  Insert1
  Plugin1
   Send2
     |
     |
   Fader
     |
     |
  Insert2
  Plugin2
  Plugin3
   Send3
     |

   Output
