Thanks for the info Tom! I may follow your advice. I am new to my 
distribution of Gentoo and don't want to break it.. I believe I 
installed ardour using the emerge (portage) system they use, though I 
have installed a lot of things on other systems with tar balls. I 
believe there is a way to make it into an 'ebuild' that doesn't break 
the system that I may have to spend a bit of time on researching.
