The files in question were actually a bit clipped at 0 db in Ardour, so what I am seeing is actually a loss in gain. I know already that rendering from 32 bit to 16 bit means a 50% loss of dynamic range. But what I found here was that this 50% loss also came with a 50% loss of gain, as if the 50% was just sliced off the bottom. If I know my audio theory well enough, isn't this one thing [besides additional noise] that dithering is supposed to avoid?
