done. and jack as well.

suse 9.2/64 w/ latest 2.6.11-rc4-bk7, custom alsa, custom jack,
custom-everything except libc and compiler ;)

the problem i had was compiling... i'm still very new to 64bit, and the
problem is that since suse is a dual system (some libs come in 32it as
well to allow the use of legacy software).

(wait, did i just say legacy to 32 bit binaries? hey, i'm getting used
to my new machine at last!)

the funky thing is i need custom CFLAGS with everything i build
(-march=k8 and -fPIC). without the former, some packages throw an
"compiler cannot create executables" during ./configure, and the letter
helps avoid errors when building .so libs. btw, does it harm to have it
always on?

neither have i, but my jack problems are *way* too severe to be fixed by
small latency tweaks. something is fundamentally f/(/&ed up here - still
investigating... i'll keep you posted if i find something out, but i
have it on the back burner just yet (busy with streaming issues for lac
2005 - looks like we're gonna have theora video streams this year).

well, 2.4 is the *old old old* kernel, and i am a version junkie indeed
thank you very much ;-D
