Just downloaded and compiled 2.3.44-pre2, of Linus's pre-patches....
Everything seems to be fine, except for the ide-cd driver...

    [try to load the module]

    [root@smitten]:~# depmod -a
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.3.44/block/ide-cd.o
    [root@smitten]:~# modprobe ide-cd
    /lib/modules/2.3.44/block/ide-cd.o: unresolved symbol cdrom_mode_select
    /lib/modules/2.3.44/block/ide-cd.o: unresolved symbol register_cdrom

    /lib/modules/2.3.44/block/ide-cd.o: unresolved symbol unregister_cdrom
    /lib/modules/2.3.44/block/ide-cd.o: unresolved symbol init_cdrom_command
    /lib/modules/2.3.44/block/ide-cd.o: unresolved symbol

    /lib/modules/2.3.44/block/ide-cd.o: insmod
    /lib/modules/2.3.44/block/ide-cd.o failed
    /lib/modules/2.3.44/block/ide-cd.o: insmod ide-cd failed
    [root@smitten]:~#

[missing symbols that are in cdrom.o]

strangely, the cdrom.o modules that usually gets built, didn't get built
    after I patched the kernel...

    [root@smitten]:/usr/src/linux/modules# ls
    BLOCK_MODULES MARKER NET_MODULES dummy.o@ ide-cd.o@ loop.o@ lp.o@
    [root@smitten]:/usr/src/linux/modules#

I usually update by patching, then running make oldconfig; make dep; make
    clean; make modules; make modules_install; make bzlilo;

Am I doing anything significantly wrong here?

Also, I appear to get the message for the ne2k-pci.c driver twice during
    bootup:

    [cut output from dmesg]

    ...
    ne2k-pci.c:vpre-1.00e 5/27/99 D. Becker/P. Gortmaker
    http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/ne2k-pci.html
    ne2k-pci.c:vpre-1.00e 5/27/99 D. Becker/P. Gortmaker
    http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/ne2k-pci.html
    ne2k-pci.c: PCI NE2000 clone 'Winbond 89C940' at I/O 0xb800, IRQ 3.
    eth0: Winbond 89C940 found at 0xb800, IRQ 3, 00:20:78:17:99:71.
    ...

Any input would be appreciated, and even just a note acknowledging the
issue... Please CC, as I am not on the kernel list.

Thanks in advance for your time.
