sg driver wars, status ?

    I see that the sg driver has moved to version 3.X within the 2.3
    kernel series. Its hard to tell if the criticisms of the driver by
    cdrecord's author are still valid, because things appear to have
    changed quite a bit. As far as I can tell, there was a political war
    over the driver back in late 1998. What is the status of the sg driver
    now, particular w.r.t Joerg Schilling's critique (*) ?
