    You might be at the wrong level at solving the problem, in that
    coding up a data structure or media technology FS could be at
    a better perspective to optimize disk IO bandwidth.

    There's a bunch of papers on multi media file systems, that might
    be of help to you. What you're doing is kind of hackish from initial
    glance. I don't know.

    By the way, BeOS streaming movies is ridiculously impressive.
