I reported earlier that Al's patch had worked for me on pre5, but then
after a few days I rebooted and it failed.

I just booted pre6-5, started up Netscape Communicator and Messenger on
an fvwm desktop and noticed that I was already 700k into swap on a 96Mb
system. When the previous shutdown failed I was 24MB into swap. I
shutdown again and repeated the same startup sequence, started all of
the same things, but now I am only using 66MB of the 93 available and no
swap. This seems a bit strange.
I have no idea if it's related to the shutdown problem.
