I am getting the same kind of problem, but I have usbcore compiled as
modules, so everything compiles OK, but on a depmod -a, I get:

depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.3.99-pre6/usb/usbcore.o
depmod: lock_kernel
depmod: unlock_kernel
