    So the callback knows what is going on. Like umm Duh ???

    Its can be a nice construct when you need to pass parameters through a
    generic layer but dont want to attach them permanently to structures. The
    net code makes rather nice use of it..

    There is the matter of doing it in the right cases and with taste but your
    general 'ugh' doesn't reflect reality.
