2.3.99-pre8 freeze in X (with dd)

During a 500meg dd to a IDE disk pre8 becomes unusably unresponsive. 2nd
time I did the test, X froze completely. After rebooting, the log says:
"VM: killing process X" which explains the hang. So it isn't freeing
something? I also ran bonnie and got simularly poor numbers (especially
as regard writing) as with pre6, which is where most of these problems
(VM/swap/IO etc) seem to have started.

Sticking to 2.3.51 for now. :-(
