After going nuts for several hours trying to debug
someone else's work, and getting everything under the
sun, like printk and jiffies, etc., coming up as
unresolved, I decided to try with the micro-module
given as the hello-world example in the O'Reilly
    device drivers book. Sure enough:

    hello.o: unresolved symbol printk

Here is the weird bit. This machine is nearly
identical to another machine that I have to another
machine I am running, with one exception; the screwed
one is an SMP box. The installations are as similar
as I was able to make them.

When I boot with a uniprocessor kernel, it works
fine after a recompile. In each case, I have made
sure that the correct System.map is in place.
