I'm having real stability problems with recent kernels. The system
runs fine for a few minutes,
sometimes for a couple of hours, then stops with the attached oops. Any
    ideas what is going on?

Also with recent kernels the APIC detection seems to be dodgy...

The top of my log says:

Jun 16 22:48:56 spock kernel: OEM ID: _AMI_ Product ID: 840_CARMEL__
    APIC at: 0xFEE00000
Jun 16 22:48:56 spock kernel: Processor #0 Pentium(tm) Pro APIC version
    17
Jun 16 22:48:56 spock kernel: Floating point unit present.
Jun 16 22:48:56 spock kernel: Machine Exception supported.
Jun 16 22:48:56 spock kernel: 64 bit compare & exchange supported.
Jun 16 22:48:56 spock kernel: Internal APIC present.
Jun 16 22:48:56 spock kernel: Bootup CPU

    But further down I get...

Jun 16 19:56:11 spock kernel: WARNING: unexpected IO-APIC, please mail
    Jun 16 19:56:11 spock kernel: to linux-smp@vger.rutgers.edu

    Jun 16 19:56:11 spock kernel: .................................... done.

Since it has clearly identified the APIC earlier, it appears to have
    forgotten about it later.
