    I have this same problem under 2.2.17pre4 -- the sound card makes
    hideous noises the first time it's used with the same error messages.
    it started happening only when i started building IDE as a module and
    booting with an initrd.

    Do you have ide-* modularized? I see you say you have a "Dell
    Laptop"... mine is also, a Latitude CS. Which model do you have?

    In Documentation/sound/NM256, it mentions that some Sony laptops need
    a 'buffertop' option to stop "random noise"... does anyone have any
    idea how to locate the optimum value for this option?
