ide-scsi + /dev/dsp == solid lockup

I'm reporting a problem that has plagued me for many kernels. The
quick summary: If I am burning a CD-R using cdrecord (my burner is
an HP 8100i, internal IDE, so I'm using the ide-scsi module) while
playing music through /dev/dsp (soundcard is a SoundBlaster AWE64), my
machine will lock solid after an indefinite period of time. This is
reproducable; I've made a few coasters this way, in fact I just did
again which prompted me to write this. The lockup does not respond to
alt-sysrq keys or anything else but a hard reboot. When it occurs the
cd burner stops burning, music stops playing, I start swearing. I have
gotten used to just not playing music while burning CDs but every couple
of kernels I try it again hoping my problem is cured but to no avail.

I never get this problem by only burning a CD or only playing music
through /dev/dsp, both have to be occuring simultaneously for this to
happen, and those simultaneous events appear to be completely sufficient
for the lockup to occur. I can sometimes get away with playing music
for a few minutes while burning a CD and then stopping the music,
and then there is no problem. I have an external removable drive
(Castelwood ORB) which is SCSI and does not need to be mounted/detected
    for this to occur.

Unfortunately no messages appear in any of my logs when this occurs. Is
there a way to run the kernel through a debugger, maybe that would shed
some light? I am not a kernel hacker, apologies for sounding dumb.

I will now barf out lots of stuff, apologies if it's not sufficient. I
am not currently subscribed to the kernel list, please Cc: to
orf@mailbag.com. I will be happy to supply any more information or to
    try any suggestions.

My current flavor of Linux is redhat 7 with all upgrades as of today
    (oct. 14).
